Faux Plants – Styling Tips & Where to Buy Artificial Greenery

I’ve openly admitted this before and I will say it again, “I do not have a green thumb.” Even though I’m not a Plant Momma, I love the look of having real plants indoors. Plants add a beautiful touch of nature and greenery to any space.

Trust me when I say I’ve tried. I’ve owned numerous plants and none of them have survived. This is why I find so much joy adding faux plants to my home.

Styling tips for fake plants

Tip 1: Repot

My best advice for styling faux plants is to repot them. I know that sounds ridiculous but I’m telling you, it will make all the difference. It always feels like faux greenery comes in pots that are too small for their size. It makes them look a little unproportioned in my opinion.

Make life easy by simply finding a new pot or vase that is larger than the original. This way you can place it into the larger container without cutting it out of its original home.

Tip 2: Figure out the best height for your faux beauty

Some artificial plants look best at lower heights. These plants have a soft or shiny finish on the top of the leaves, but the underneath might look a little too faux, if you know what I mean… Place these on coffee tables, end tables, or counters so you can easily see the best side of the leaves.

If you have anything that is long and cascading, add it to a shelf or on a mantle. I love draping long succulents or faux string of pearl plants off the edge of shelves. Style them in a tall vase to extend the long, flow-y feeling.

Tip 3: Add potting soil to artificial plants on lower surfaces

Ok, so you’ve found your perfect faux plant. You’ve repotted it into a larger pot but now you can see the original pot sticking below the surface because this beauty is proudly staying on your dining room table.  My last tip is to add potting soil.

It may sound crazy and even a little messy, but adding soil really tricks the eye. Make sure you completely cover the original container. If using stems in a clear or translucent vase, you can add a little water.

Where to find the best faux plants

Faux greenery has come a long way even in the last few years. I have a few fake plants that I LOOOOVED when I originally purchased them about three years ago that now look incredibly unrealistic. Here are my favorite places to find artificial plants:

Target

Target has amazingly realistic greenery. I love the seasonal items coming out of the Threshold line, especially the Studio McGee collection. I’ve also found some great finds from Project 62 and Hearth and Hand with Magnolia.

Ikea

I’m pretty sure everyone knows about the awesome faux plant selection at Ikea. Every time I visit, I end up picking up one or two new plants right before hitting the checkout line. If I’m adding my plant to a bookshelf, I like to take a step back and make sure it looks realistic from a distance. You want to avoid anything that is too shiny or too brightly colored.

HomeGoods, Michael’s, and More

The HomeGoods near me has an exquisite selection of artificial greenery and pots. On those same lines, you’ll usually find some great finds at Marshall’s.

If you’re looking for some floral stems, check out Michael’s. I’ve always found their flowers to look the most realistic. I also love their collection of hanging plants and macramé holders.

If your thumb doesn’t have even the slightest tint of green, try adding some faux plants (in larger pots) to your space. Tag me on Instagram when you do!
